The project presents the outcome of material research into banana stems, presenting a series of lighting fixtures utilizing various parts of the banana stem. It suggests new ways of using the material, creating ecological and sustainable products while generating job opportunities for communities in tropical countries that grow bananas. The design uses traditional paper crafting and brush-tying techniques, using simple and accessible production tools. For every ton of bananas harvested, two tons of agricultural waste are burnt: therefore, using the banana stems helps to reduce the environmental damage cost. This process can also generate income for many people, and without the need for high levels of either education or financial investment.
