Nimati is a Palestinian from Jerusalem, majoring in Communications & Education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. During her internship with Kayan, Nimati learned about developing gender-based projects and activities with women and youth. She also learned about how to conduct needs assessments, evaluations, training, building and implementing a campaign, interacting with the community and women, building gender-based projects, and about the organization's structure and how different organizations work together. In her internship, she participated in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign, part of the Global 16 Days Campaign. Nimati was an active participant in the campaign’s preparations and implementation, working on preparing and organizing the campaign and its activities, with Kayan’s staff and Palestinian women from different localities. The campaign featured daily intensive awareness-raising public activities, which in the end added up to over 30 activities held in several localities. The activities included community workshops, training sessions, lectures, protests, and the distribution of masks and T-shirts with campaign slogans targeted at the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Hundreds of women, youth, and men, including political decision-makers, participated in the campaign, where they engaged in open discussions and debates about violence against women in Arab society and learned about key ways in which they can act as change-makers in their daily lives and in their communities.
Gender-based violence is a major issue facing women all over the world, and Palestinian women in particular. There has been a painful increase in violence against women in 2020, and rates of femicide are rising from year to year. This photo was taken during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign led by the Kayan Feminist Organization. We can see Palestinian women protesting in Arab localities in order to raise awareness about the issue and for their voices to be heard.
