Zoë Mason grew up in Maine, USA, and has been living in Israel since 2014. She completed a Bachelor’s in Latin American Studies and Literature at Prescott College in Arizona. For the internship component of the Glocal program, Zoë interned with Kaima Tanzania, which was founded by a Glocal alumnus. Their programs focus on vocational skills, food security, economic independence, and women’s empowerment. Zoë offered training and workshops in agriculture and other entrepreneurial skills. She participated in strategic planning for the growth of programs geared at teenage youth who have not completed formal education. With a fellow student, Zoë established a partnership between Kedma youth village in Israel and the youth village being established at Kaima Tanzania. The Tanzanian youth were excited about the opportunity to connect with the Israeli teenagers, especially through videos, despite the language barriers and poor internet connection. They enjoy singing throughout the workday to keep their spirits up. This internship experience enabled Zoë to gain confidence in professional leadership, project management, and leading diverse workshops. The experience, through both academic and field exposure, also focused her interest within the vast field of development.

This image, from the commute to Kaima Youth Village, depicts the ferry docking at the harbor on Lake Victoria. A crew member extends a hand to passengers disembarking and wading to the shore. The bicycle bears sacks of charcoal, sold illegally for quick cash. The woman on the right is collecting water; a constant flow of women and children walk along the path, balancing buckets on their heads. Everyone is determined to make ends meet and reach their work and families, despite persistent challenges. Kaima Tanzania reaches an isolated rural population to build opportunities for entrepreneurial growth.
